Apple plans to buy $850 million worth of energy from solar farm in California!

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook Apple and First Solar are partnering up and leading by example into a renewable energy future!

Apple already owns two solar farms in North Carolina and one in Nevada, First Solar's California Flats Solar Project in Monterey County will be its fourth. This investment will power all of Apple's California stores, offices, headquarters and a data center

Cook also notes that Apple's data centres are run on renewable energy and the company pledged to run a new $2 billion Arizona data centre completely on solar power.

According to Investor's Business Daily,

"Apple's commitment was instrumental in making this project possible and will significantly increase the supply of solar power in California," Joe Kishkill, chief commercial officer for First Solar, said in a statement. "Over time, the renewable energy from California Flats will provide cost savings over alternative sources of energy as well as substantially lower environmental impact."

Hopefully, more and more big corporations start investing in renewable energy. We can already see it happening with some corporations, such as Google, who is currently using renewable energy to power 35% of their operations, and are continuing to look for ways to increase their use of clean energy.

Gladly, we have something to be happy about here in Australia too, a solar farm has officially opened in Royalla south of Canberra. This 20 megawatt Royalla Solar Farm was developed by a Spanish company called Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) and consists of 83,000 solar panels, having the capacity to power more than 4,500 ACT homes.

We hope that these actions convince other corporations to invest in renewable energy, and essentially divest from fossil fuels!
