Are Period Underwear A Good Solution For The Postpartum Period And Bladder Leaks?

We always talk about period underwear as this great, sustainable solution for menstrual products. But the thing is, there are so many other times during our lives when we're a little leaky down there, and we could use the extra support, and confidence in knowing that whatever we're using to keep our leaks under control, it's going to work.

One of those times is postpartum and beyond, when our pelvic floor isn't quite what it was nine months earlier.

Having a baby adds an exponential number of things to our to-do lists, the last thing we want to be worrying about at that time is whether or not we're staining our sheets, or praying that our bladders won't let us down when we're out and about.

Plus, going forwards, if leakage continues, wearing pads and liners every day is not only uncomfortable, but it means we're buying and throwing out hundreds and hundreds of them - often made from plastic, and they'll never break down in landfill.

We decided to ask our audience about their experiences using Modibodi as a solution to leaks during the postpartum period and throughout post-birth life. We asked them how they wash their Modbodis, and how discovering Modibodi underwear has helped them. Here are the stories and answers we got back!

Kate (name changed for anonymity)

I am post menopausal, and live with a double prolapse and hereditary urgency issues. I gave birth vaginally to two large babies, my episiotomy was big, but expertly repaired. However I have suffered urgency and 'leakage' ever since. After menopause I found my bladder issues worsened.

No one, including my doctor or physiotherapist has been able to fully address my problems. I have undergone bladder retraining, increased pelvic floor exercises and taken drugs to no avail.

For many years I wore menstrual pads, both disposable and reusable. They are expensive, bulky and uncomfortable.

Modibodi has been wonderful. They are comfortable, look like normal underwear, and hold a light leak. When in change rooms, the doctors or even when undressing for bed, I do not feel like I'm an incontinent old woman (I'm not yet 60).

They were so successful I bought them for my 90 year old mother. She feels so safe she is participating in events she had avoided due to urgency issues.

Thank goodness Modibodi has allowed me and my mother to overcome the stigma of the sneaky wee.

I bought some after having my first daughter after my sister told me about them. I bought them for when my period would return but tried them out and found them perfect for going out and not having to worry about my weak pelvic floor causing embarrassing mishaps.

I haven't had to use or buy any disposable liners and have only used the odd pad and heavy maternity pads when I had my second child. I got some maternity ones for my second pregnancy and used those as my postpartum bleeding eased off. Now if I'm going out I always put on a pair, saves me from an errant sneeze or leak (usually when I'm literally in sight of home) and then I change them when I get home.

They're very comfortable, particularly the maternity ones. I still wear them now even though my 2nd is 9 months old. They're easy to wash and wash well. I've had pairs for 2 years now that are going strong.

I first bought Modibodi underwear for my period, because I was finding pads really uncomfortable (but can't use tampons/cups) and was concerned about how much waste my period was creating.

Modibodi has helped me cut down on my waste, which makes me really happy, and I also feel more comfortable and confident wearing these compared to normal underwear and liners. For someone like me who often has light bladder leakage, I just feel so much more confident wearing these out than wearing underwear and liners, constantly worrying if I need to change my liner, and feeling uncomfortable all the time.

When you wear them for the first time, you're a bit nervous about leaks but they are just so comfortable and I feel so supported putting them on, and also feel so dry! Compared to using liners for bladder leaks (which just stay damp and are yuck!), Modibodi underwear are so dry and comfortable. They're pretty straightforward to wash - just rinse until the water runs clear and throw them in your usual cold machine wash. I don't wash that often, so usually just hand wash these with laundry soap at night and hang them out to dry overnight.
