Shailene Woodley wants you to eat bugs with her

Shailene Woodley is a red carpet regular. You've probably seen her in the Fault in our Stars and/or that Divergent series.

I haven't seen either one because I hate Ansel Elgort with a passion (the guy DJ's under the name "Ansølo" and that's just not okay). It's Shailene's activities off the red carpet that have captured the world's attention this week.

In a recent interview, while promoting her latest film the 23-year-old was asked about the strangest food she has ever eaten - to which she replies, "I've eaten ants and that was great. And June bugs, that was great. I think the future of food is in insects, so we'll see what happens."

Shailene is fast becoming known for her, "hippie" antics in Hollywood and while not many people were surprised at her kooky answer, quite a few were disgusted at the thought of eating bugs.

We think she may actually be on to something. Our oceans are overfished, climate change and related water shortages are having profound implications for the worlds food production. .. Insects could be the answer. The UN certainly agrees, calling embracing eating insects "one of many ways to address food and feed security for the future."

Did you know that crickets require 12 times less food than cattle for the same amount of animal protein per 100g? They also reproduce quickly and easily, require less water, less land, and produce less waste than traditional animal protein sources.

A 2013 report published by the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organisation reported the most popular insects to eat are: beetles, caterpillars, bees, wasps, ants, grasshoppers, locusts and crickets.

Over 2 billion people around the world are already eating insects as part of their daily diet, not to mention we accidentally consume bugs all the time. Did you know your (225 gram) glass of orange juice can legally contain five fruit flies? So we're all already just as gross as Shailene.

What are your thoughts? Are insects the food of the future?
