How To Bake The Perfect Tofu

As far as I'm concerned, the best way to cook tofu is to bake it! You can get exactly the texture you want without having to fry it or stand over a pan forever.

Baking tofu is great for weeknight dinners as well! While the tofu is baking, you can throw some seasoned carrots, broccoli, onion, peppers or anything else you like on another baking tray to bake as well. If you've got any leftovers, these tend to make for an awesome cold snack, or you can throw the tofu into a stir fry the following night.

Ingredients

  • 16 oz block of firm or extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1-2 teaspoons grated ginger

Note:

You can really flavour your tofu any way you like! If you'd like to use garlic or herbs in your marinade, I recommend combining all the ingredients and then heating the marinade in the microwave or on the stove top until it boils to get the most flavour.

If you'd like to make you own marinade, use these amounts as a guide:

  • 2-3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil of choice
  • 2-3 tablespoons of other liquid or wet flavorings like vinegar, fruit juice, pre-made sauces, etc
  • 1 tablespoon or less of herbs, spices, or aromatics

Method:

Press tofu for 15-20 minutes, or an hour if you have time. The more water you remove from the tofu, the more of your marinade it will soak up

While tofu is being pressed, prepare your marinade by combining all ingredients in a large bowl

Chop tofu into bite size pieces, ensuring that they are all the same size, or else they will have different cooking times. If you'd like your pieces a bit bigger, just note that they'll need more time in the oven

Gently toss tofu in marinade and leave to soak for 10 – 15 minutes, or for more time if you've got it (I often prep my marinade and tofu the day before, leaving it to soak overnight for maximum flavour!)

Line baking tray with non-stick baking paper

Place marinated tofu on the tray with spaces inbetween each piece and bake for 15 minutes

Remove tofu from oven and flip each piece, then bake for another 15 minutes

Serve any way you like!
