How to Cook Pasta Faster, With Less Energy and Less Water

Anyone can cook pasta, but can pasta be cooked in any old way?

Knowing how to cook pasta is a pretty basic life skill we all learn somewhere along the way, even if it wasn't until you first moved out of home.

When someone says "I can't even cook pasta" everyone rolls their eyes incredulously. But, have we all been cooking pasta the wrong way?

The kitchen wisdom most of us receive is that you need a lot of water and a large saucepan to boil pasta. This is not entirely true, it's just what is accepted.

Harold McGee, author of Keys to Good Cooking: A Guide to Making the Best of Foods and Recipes , explains that not only can you cook pasta in a frying pan with a whole lot less water, but you also don't have to wait for the water to boil beforehand. Instead, he suggests, put the pasta in when the water is cold and you won't get pasta sticking to itself either.

Less cooking time, less water and less energy used! Yep, I think we may have all been missing out on this pasta method.

Plus, he suggests using the excess pasta water (the soupy looking stuff we usually pour down the drain) as the perfect ingredient to adjust the consistency of your sauce.

This video explains it all.
