The cosmetics are sustainable and economical alternatives to things most of us are using daily.
On top of questionable ingredients included in prepackaged items, you’ll be avoiding all that unnecessary and wasteful packaging that would otherwise just be going to landfill.
Recycle at home or away to avoid wasting resources
Estimated CO2 Saving: 17kg per month (200kg per year)
Recycle everything you can. When making these products give a thought on how you will be storing them, an upcycled tin or jar is the best option to reduce your carbon footprint.
Foundation
This light powder is reminiscent of a natural mineral make up, however it is a bit lighter. You can play around with different colours until you find one that suits your skin perfectly. I've been wearing this combination into the 1MW office and all of the ladies have been telling my skin is 'glowing', guess the secrets out now!
Ingredients:
- Arrowroot powder (can be replaced with cornstarch)
- Cocoa powder
- Cinnamon powder
- jojoba oil (optional)
Method:
It will take a while to get your exact skin tone, but just play around with the amount of cocoa powder and cinnamon powder you want. I always start with just the cinnamon, test and then slowly add cocoa powder. Brush lightly on your neck to test.
Over did it? Don't throw your ingredients away, here's a link to some delicious biscuits that also use these ingredients .
If you want your powder to turn more 'compact', add a few drops of your jojoba oil and press down.
Eye Shadow
- Cocoa powder or cinnamon = Brown
Add a touch of shea butter, coconut oil OR your carrier oil of choice. Again play around with colours until you get what you like. It's a lot of fun!

- 1 Tbsp sweet almond oil
- 2 Tbsp beeswax
- 15 drops Lavender essential oil

Equipment You’ll Need:
- a small, upcycled container to store your lip balm. I use old empty lip gloss jars and tubes.
- a large rubber band
Method:
- Remove the lids from the lip balm tubes and secure upright with a large rubber band.
- Gently melt the coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler (or in a glass bowl set on top of a sauce pot of simmering water).
- Remove from heat and then stir in the sweet almond oil and essential oils.
- Quickly pour the melted oil into containters. You have to move very quickly before the oils start to set.
- Allow the lip balm to set and then cap the containers.
