There are 16.7 million pairs of shoes sitting idle in homes across Australia

Did you know that 64% of Australians have unwanted/unused shoes? Don't buy a new pair, SHARE with the 1 Million Women hub on TuShare- Extend the life of a good quality shoe!

WHY?

1 Million Women is partnering with TuShare to kick off a campaign to save 1 million kilograms from landfill , starting with a pair of shoes. Last year 1/3 of Australians threw things away that were in usable condition , this is a great opportunity for all of us to learn to do things differently.

The 1 Million Kilogram campaign empowers a million women to each reuse just 1 kilogram of clothing (that's one pair of shoes or roughly 4 dresses). The collective impact this could have is profound; saving 1 million kilograms of landfill avoids approximately 10 billion litres of water waste (that's 4000 Olympic swimming pools) and prevents 8 million kilograms of carbon dioxide production (growing a forest of approx. 45,000 trees).

O.K so it's share your shoes Month on TuShare.

Great as I do have a number of shoes that I don't wear and will probably never wear for a variety of reasons like:

  • I am sick of them.
  • They just don't fit me.
  • They don't match anything in my wardrobe.
  • I don't need them anymore.

When I think about how I will dispose of the items overcrowding my life, this week- my shoes, I find myself asking what TuShare really is?

Is it just another dumping ground for ALL my items I no longer want or need? Or is it another place? A place where I can share loved items that still have life in them, and not risk them being dumped into landfill by charities that have a surplus of stock on their hands. For me TuShare is that middle ground where items that are good quality and still have life in them can go and hopefully begin another life.

My experience with TuShare has made me really think, not only about the amount of items in my life but also about the quality of the items I own.

Take my shoes for example, the crappy ones usually break or get thrown away as they wear out. The really expensive ones usually escape the cull because I wear them the most, until they are ready to die or be given a new life, and the middle ones after careful assessment are either for TuShare or Vinnies.

You see what's happening?

Thanks to TuShare I am now really starting to understand quality over quantity (finally) and am passing on items that I no longer need to someone else can enjoy them.

Also when I do purchase something new I am thinking about that item more than I ever have, analysing exactly what I need and then trying to buy the best quality. It is so clear to me that the things we love and wear year in year out are the things we paid the most for! Why? Because they last longer and seem never to go out of fashion.

I am trying to teach this to my 3 teenagers, so they can start implementing this lasting and sustainable shopping practice and extend the life of their better quality items by using TuShare and maybe gain a few new bits from this wonderful sharing platform. But best of all is by adopting this new attitude to my things I am reducing waste and pollution.

But back to my shoes….. I wish them all the best on their new journey into someone else's life, maybe that someone is YOU!
