New Solar Suburb to be built near Darwin!

Defence Housing Australia is building a "solar suburb" near Darwin! Each home will have a 4.5kW rooftop solar system and charging points for electric vehicles. This is great, I am imagining a completely green/solar Sims type suburb.

Defence Housing Australia provide quality housing and related services to Defence members and their families. They say that the home owners living in this new development will save more than $2,000 a year on their electricity bills, or around 70 per cent of the average bill. So, they will be happy Sims!

The new Award-winning development at Breezes Muirhead, according to the DHA, will create a 337kW solar suburb, producing 600,000kWh of solar electricity a year. The installations could save Defence members more than $4.125 million in electricity costs, and avoid generation of over 8.35 million tonnes of CO2. There will be 1,151 lots, with DHA building 329 properties for Defence members and their families. The remaining land lots will be sold to the public.

The houses will feature JA Solar Panels and Enphase micro-inverters. These micro-inverters will enable wifi, which will allow residents to monitor their electrify generations via a smartphone app and website.

According to RenewEconomy,

DHA Managing Director Peter Howman said the company wanted to ensure that it left a social and environmental legacy. 'The benefits of this new solar technology are wide-spread.

"In addition to the environmental benefits, the technology and installation will reduce construction times and improve site-safety. The inbuilt technology will also allow residents to see at-a-glance, the real impact of the systems on their electricity bills," he said in a statement.

Well done!
