Deck the halls with up-cycled beauties!

We've given you some suggestions for a less wasteful Christmas tree for your home, today we’re going to give you some suggestions for decorating that tree.

Handmade decorations bring thought and meaning intro your home.

They reflect the time, effort, and love that you put into making them. When your ornaments have sentimental value, you’re more likely to want to save them for years to come! Whereas, colourful bobbles that you’d find on a tree are often plastic (which is always wise to avoid), come with heaps of packaging, or not last very long. You can avoid unfortunate ornamental side effects and buying new by simply sprucing up some ordinary objects from around your home. These projects range from no sweat, a kid can do it, to craft goddess or Martha Stuart status.

Old CD ornaments

Do you have any old CDs lying around that you don’t intend on playing ever again? The Lion King soundtrack? No, I’ll keep that one thanks… for my grandkids I swear. Online music downloading have rendered CDs a bit out of use. But we’re all about putting them back into circulation.

They are beautiful and shiny and can make for an amazing Christmas tree ornaments. You can keep them nice a circular or cut them into festive shapes (not suitable for kids). You can keep the back side shining and paint the other side with cool patterns or a loved one’s name. The best part is they already have a hole straight through the center, perfect for stringing and hanging on the tree. And honestly, if you don’t do any significant damage to the CD (skip the cutting idea), you’ll still be able to play it!

Bottle top snowmen

What you need: 3 bottle caps, some paint (white, black, orange), a thin paint brush, ribbon, glue or tape, buttons, and a pair of scissors. We got this lovely idea from. Its a fairly simple project, 100% adorable, and can be made from things you already have lying around the home.

Rudolf the wine-deer

For the most basic reindeer you’ll need: two wine corks, 6 little twigs (4 for the legs and 2 for the antlers).

If you want to jazz Rudolf up a bit you can use ribbon, googley eyes, or puff balls. We recommend this if you have them in house already, but there are loads of other decorating options that you can pursue without having to buy something new. Don’t ever think you have to follow instructions word for word, supply by supply. Indeed, some of the most creative works come from thinking outside the box and taking from inside the home.

Cookie cutter clutter

How easy is this! If you’ve got some spare cookie cutters, you can reduce that clutter by making it into an ornament. All you have to do is put a string on them and hang em up. Like the CDs, they’ll provide a little extra shine and can be put back into your cookie cutter tin for later use once the holiday has passed!

Scrabble me this

Board games can be an excellent source for ornament supplies! Arange letters into a meaningful message from your scrabble board. You’ll probably want to glue them down. You can do this with tape as well to make it less permanent. Other ideas include using puzzle piece to create great geometric shapes, little figurines from a monopoly board… the list goes on!

Mr. Popper’s lightbulb penguins

These were too adorable to ignore. Use those lightbulbs you didn’t know what to do with when you upgraded from incandescent with fluorescent - See more here.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Twiggy stars

Or snowflakes. On your next walk have a look around on the ground for some twigs that strike your fancy. Twigs and other nature items make for such great Christmas decorations because they have that vintage, natural feel to them. Use twine, ribbon, glue, or ever floss to fasten them together.
