Experiences over things

Here they are, our 24 climate action tips in 24 hours (It’s like a greatest hits countdown only better). Enjoy! Act! Make a difference!

This holiday season 1MW offers you an alternative to the “things as gifts” phenomenon that has become a societal norm. Instead of going out and purchasing overpackaged plastic toys or new clothing you just don’t need, consider putting your hard earn-ed cash toward an experience.

One of my favorite gifts to my best friend last year was a three-hour chocolate truffle making class at a small local chocolatier shop. I attended the class with her, we had a blast together being creative, tempering and filling molds, and eating our fair share of the locally produced dark chocolate. I came away from it feeling like I’d expanded my personal skills, knowledge, and knew that it was an experience I wouldn’t forget. Even better was that I didn’t have to deal with another gift that I didn’t have space for in my room.

Now, there are many different and maybe less costly options for self-expanding experiences. It may even be going on a hike or having a picnic on the beach but the message is the same. It could be you teaching someone to sew a cool shirt in return for them teaching you how to make their awesome banana bread. Showing your appreciation towards someone doesn’t always have to come wrapped in a box with a bow. Think back on the moments that have meant the most to you and channel gift-spiration from that.

At 1MW we challenge people to ask themselves “ Do I really need that ?”, before purchasing something. The answer for an article of clothing or furniture may be no but the chance to experience something new or improve your skillset is always yes! As women, our purses hold a great deal of economic power and over-consumption puts a huge burden on the planet. So use your purse for good this year and keep an eye out for 1MW’s No Waste Christmas campaign!
