[Update] Residents can now sue oil companies for damages resulting from quakes

A landmark decision from the Oklahoma Supreme Court means that oil and gas companies are now accountable for injuries or damage to property as a result of the earthquakes caused by their industry.

New research from the University of Colorado has associated pretty conclusively the sharp rise in earthquakes is a result of hydraulic fracturing, known as "fracking" (a drilling technique whereby water is extracted from the ground along with oil and gas, separated, and then re-injected into deep wells), and is yet another indication that the oil and gas industry is leading to dramatic environmental consequences.

In fact, it's not just more earthquakes that are putting people in danger. Fracking also releases methane gas into drinking water systems, so much so that people can set it on fire.

Just another example of how people power can hopefully change the actions and attitudes of large corporations.
