Bi-carb soda: How you can use this one product for (nearly) everything

Bi-carb soda. When did you last use it? Was it for that science experiment in primary school? A cake you made last year? It’s time to crack out that box and start looking at how it can replace a whole range of products around your home.

We've previously looked at some of the 10 great uses for bi-carb soda, but what actually IS this stuff and why should you use it around your home?

Meet bi-carb soda: your new best friend

Sodium bicarbonate, aka good ol' bi-carb soda, is a naturally occurring white solid that you usually encounter in powder form.

It's long been used for domestic and personal hygiene purposes. Even the Ancient Egyptians used it!

Why use bi-carb?

Products in your kitchen, laundry and bathroom cupboard more likely than not have a number of chemicals that will end up being washed down the drain, into your local creek or leeching into the ground in your garden. This isn't so great for plants and animals that rely on pollution-free water and soil to thrive.

Chemical compounds in some cleaning and beauty products may impact your health. For example, everyone in my family has sensitive skin, so traditional cleaning products tend to cause itchiness, dryness and can even make our eczema worse.

Bi-carb soda, on the other hand, is safe enough to use in contact with your skin, won't kill you if you consume it (in fact, it's a vital ingredient in many recipes) and allows you to know exactly what you're putting on your body and around the home.

How to use it

Here's a list of some of our team's favourite ways to use bi-carb soda. Let us know in the comments below if there's a use you've found that we've forgotten!

Why is DIY great?

Everything we buy and consume has a carbon footprint. The more complex a product is (eg. Ingredients, packaging etc.), the longer its path to you has probably been.

As shoppers and consumers, we can make conscious decisions around what we buy, how we use products and how we dispose of them. By opting for DIY solutions, we have greater knowledge and control over the impact we are having on the environment.
