5 important items that need to be recycled, here's how!

Recycling at home can make such a difference, but there are so many things that you may not know can and should be recycled!

Here's some of the important ones:

- Mobile Phones :

According to MobileMuster "It's estimated there are over 23 million unwanted mobiles in homes around Australia" . Mobile phones " are not biodegradable and contain substances that can potentially harm the environment if not handled correctly at the end of a phone's useful life". So donate your phones to Mobile Muster or other companies that recycle phones and save them going into landfill!

-Batteries:

Batteries contain harmful metal! Rechargeable batteries can be recycled as most rechargeable batteries lose their ability to hold charge after 1,00 charges or 2-5 years, depending on how often they are used. Thus, it is much better to recycle them rather than throwing them in the trash. Try here to recycle your batteries!

- ipods:

Apple has a deal that if you bring in your broken or old i-pod for recycling you get a 10 percent discount off your next one. Check out this site for terms and conditions.

-NIKE sneakers:

Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe initiative takes worn out athletic shoes and grinds them down to create high-quality sports surfaces including courts, turf fields, tracks and more. According to the Nike Website "Since 1990, we’ve transformed 28 million pairs of shoes and 36,000 tons of scrap material into Nike Grind for use in more than 450,000 locations around the world." Find out more information here .

-Printer-ink cartridges:

Australians throw away more than 18 million printer cartridges every year. This amounts to over 5,000 tonnes of material, including laser toner cartridges, inkjet cartridges, photocopier toner bottles and drums, that will eventually end up in landfill. When printer cartridges break apart in landfill, they have the potential to contaminate groundwater and the environment. Recycle your ink-cartridges with Planet Ark.
