Top 10 green celebrities, changing the world for the better

It's great to see celebrities advocating for the causes we believe in.

Check out our list of top 10 actors, actresses, singers, and bands who are doing their part in fighting climate change!

1. Jack Johnson: Singer-songwriter Jack Johnson is truly an inspiration to us all when it comes to protecting and giving back to the planet. While on tour, he uses sustainable biodiesel to power his tour busses and energy efficient lighting at his tour venues. And that's not all, the headquarters of Jack's label, Brushfire Records, is constructed out of recycled materials and all of the CD covers produced by the label are made out of recycled paper.


2. Meryl Streep Hollywood's leading lady credits motherhood for inspiring her environmentalism. As a founder of the environmental group Mothers and Others, Meryl served early on as a spokeswoman to inform the public about the toxic and dangerous chemicals being used in our food. She is an outspoken advocate for conscious consumption and has implemented geothermal heating and cooling in her own home.

3. The Roots

The popular hip hop group who play on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon have been environmentally conscious for quite some time. The band advocates for animal rights through their involvement with PETA and have been known to give away signed compost bins to fans. The Roots also helped launch the Green Music Group, a coalition of musicians working to bring about sustainability to the music industry.

4. Cate Blanchett: Australia's own, wildly talented actress continues to impress us with her unfailing support and advocacy for environmental causes. Cate's environmental action includes serving as an Ambassador for the Australian Conservation Foundation, campaigning for a carbon tax in 2011, investing in solar energy startup companies and implementing clean energy technologies into her own home.

5. Dave Matthews Band: Going on tour for a band this popular can cause some serious environmental damage; which is why Dave Matthews took strides to reduce the carbon footprint of their tour. In addition to donating large sums of money to environmental charities, the band also planted trees to offset carbon emission, provided free public bikes for a city in Virginia, and set up a climate change relief fund to help those affected by climate induced natural disasters.

6. Shailene Woodley: Shailene's efforts to live sustainably are modelled after indigenous cultures. After studying and talking with people who were knowledgeable about the indigenous lifestyle, Shailene was inspired to adopt some of those practices into her own life for health and environmental reasons. Shailene lives an incredibly sustainable lifestyle by using herbal medicine, buying used clothes, shopping in bulk, and eating local!

7. Robert Redford: The actor serves on the Natural Resource Defense Counsel and played a crucial role in lobbying US President Obama to implement a carbon pollution limit on coal-fired power plants and reject the keystone pipeline. In addition, Robert has been an advocate for solar energy since the 1970's and continues to fight for wilderness preservation.

8. Natalie Portman: Natalie is an impressive animal rights advocate. The actress only buys products free from animal material and maintains a vegan diet. She even started her own line of vegan footwear! In addition, Natalie has been known for her involvement with Global Green USA who work to bring sustainability to cities, schools, and affordable housing.

9. Matt Damon: As an active supporter of environmental causes, Matt has been able to use his fame for good in spreading the word about climate change, pollution, and oil dependence. Matt is the founder of water.org which workds to provide clean water to developing countires. Additionally, Matt wrote and starred in the film Promise Land which discusses the environmental dangers of hydraulic fracturing and the threat it poses to communities.

10. And of course, Leonardo Dicaprio: No list would be complete without Leo! Leo's contributions to the environmental movement are extensive and diverse. The Leonardo DiCaprio foundation is committed to supporting organizations working towards a sustainable future and Leo has dedicated half his website to informing the public about environmental news and issues. Leo is also involved with the World Wildlife Fund, Natural Resources Defense Council, Global Green USA and the International Fund for Animal Welfare and continues to support investment in renewable energy.
