Thousands of empty shoes are left in place of cancelled Paris climate march

Across the globe hundreds of thousands of peaceful protesters turned out to stand against climate inaction over the weekend.

Yet in Paris, it was a different story. 200,000 activists had pledge to march in solidarity with those around the world as part of The People's Climate Movement. However, following the terrible acts of terror in Paris earlier this month the march was banned due to safety concerns.

Instead, more than 20,000 empty shoes were left in the Place de la République. Like a something from a storybook, there were shoes for horse riding, shoes for running, babies shoes, shoes for dancing, shoes for swimming, even, shoes sent from Pope Francis!

Along with the shoes, more than 10,000 activists formed a chain through the streets on the French capital.

Worldwide, people also took part in the #March4me initiative. Where marchers registered to be matched with someone in Paris who was unable to attend.

These offerings of solidarity are a beautiful reminder that no matter what, we're not going to sit in silence, we're not going to live in fear.
