Over the last seven years, Thomas Dambo has made more than 3500 birdhouses from scrap wood all over the world.
Birds are some of the few animals still living in our cities. The project is both about creating a shelter for birds and also about reminding us that it's important to leave room for birds in the urban world.
Essentially Dambo is helping to protect biodiversity. With the number of species "going extinct on the rise, it is necessary to consider the potential of urban environments to serve as refuges for the survivors" (The Conversation).
There are hundreds of community groups throughout Australia (and the world) that anyone can join who are working on ways to support our local habitats; from weeding and revegetation activities, to cleaning up rubbish, or setting up community gardens.

The below totem was created as part of a recycle workshop involving the local community.
Dambo made these recycled birdhouses for the nordic counsel during culture night in Copenhagen. They are all made from scrap wood.
This totem consists of 300 birdhouses put together on a tree and is part of an ongoing Happy City Birds project.
Dambo put together around 600 birdhouses for an installation at a festival. After the festival, he gave all the birdhouses to people and asked them to hang them up and send in pictures.
