How to stay hydrated this winter

Winter is upon us! And while it's the perfect time to sip on frothy lattes and exotic teas, it's easy to forget about the most important drink of all – water.

No longer a summertime culprit, dehydration can happen without us even realising it, thanks to cosy heated workspaces and layers upon layers of jumpers and scarves.

We've come up with a few easy ways to keep those H2O levels up in the cold!

Warm up your water

Next time you fill up your water bottle, use warm tap water – it's much more pleasant to drink than water straight from the fridge! Or if that doesn't sound too inspiring, why not make yourself a morning brew without the tea bag? Squeeze in some lemon juice instead, and you've got yourself a zesty morning beverage that won't go straight through you.

Eat salty foods

But aren't salty foods bad for you? Well yes too much salt is, but having some salt in your daily diet can help you to retain water. Drinking soup is a good way of doing this – Vegetable broth naturally contains salt, and this mixed with vegetables that have high water content (think zucchini, radish or celery) makes for an ultimate warm and hydrating meal.

Eat fruits

This can be a tough one in winter – who wants to eat a cold apple, when you can get a hot spicy chai latte instead? Since they're among the most hydrating food there is, fruit certainly deserves a bite even in the cold. Try adding fruits to warm meals – add some apple or pear to your oatmeal, or try and blend up a warm breakfast smoothie (Hot smoothies- yes, they exist!)

Ditch the caffeine

But… what about coffee? Unfortunately, our greatest love is also our greatest traitor when it comes to staying hydrated – coffee is a killer. We're not saying it has to go completely (Heaven forbid) but try to drink less of it during the day, or opt for decaf instead. If you do end up maxing out your daily coffee quota, just be sure to even it out by drinking enough water in between those cappuccinos!
