This family grows their own food in an urban environment, bringing the country to the city!

You don't have to own a farm in the countryside to grow your own!

The Dervaes family live on a 1/10th of an acre only 15 minutes from downtown L.A. A stone's throw away from the highway, they have created their own little crop oasis in their backyard. They maintain a sustainable and independent urban farm, including animals!

Every year, they produce around 1,950 kg of veggies, 900 chickens, 1000 duck eggs, 11kg of honey and tonnes of seasonal fruit. Their yard has 400 species of plants! Everything they need to 'live off the land', is walking distance away from their kitchen!

And, what the family don't eat, they sell from their porch! They can make around $20,000 a year from this. Because people love organic produce they don't have trouble finding costumers, restaurants and chefs seek them out.

This proves that you work with what you have got. So you don't need to move to the countryside to be sustainable and grow your own, you can live in an urban jungle like most of us and use the space you have, however big or small! Produce can even flourish in the middle of the Israeli desert, produce can also flourish in the middle of a city!
