Can you cut 1 Tonne of carbon pollution out of your life?
Take the challengeThis year we organised Secret Santa in the 1 Million Women team and I picked Liv, our 100,000 Girls coordinator...
Our theme was “Made with Love", so, in the 'No Waste Festive Season' spirit, I decided to make Liv a couple of 100% natural and gorgeous scrubs, with recipes I had found online and wanted to try out. After I bought the ingredients I realised I had enough to make many more pots of scrubs, so I made some extra pots that I will take to my friends and family in France. I have tried both scrubs and they are absolutely amazing. Be careful with the body scrub as it makes the shower slippery, and make sure to rinse it well. And tell your boyfriend/partner/children what it is, so that they don't try to eat it!
Here are the recipes to make those two beautiful scrubs. Make sure to get organic or fair trade ingredients whenever you can if you want to minimise your impact on the planet as much as possible J
Cacao & Coffee Body Scrub
Ingredients (for 1 jar of scrub):
1 cup Raw sugar
¼ cup Organic unrefined coconut oil
½ cup Fairtrade ground coffee
3 tbsp Organic cacao powder
Accessories needed:
Recycled jars with lids (collect old ones them from everyone you know, I used old jars which used to contain jam, pasta sauce, coconut oil etc.)
Twine (or any recycled string or ribbon you have)
Jute or any other pretty fabric to cover the lids (you can even cut-up old t-shirts)
Recycled paper for the tags
Holepunch & scissors
Instructions:
The most annoying part: Clean and dry all your jars thoroughly and remove old labels. They might need scrubbing if the labels were really sticky. It took a while but I got all the labels of mine.
Now the fun part: Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Add more coconut oil or more raw sugar to adjust consistency. You want it to be soft and easily scoopable but not too runny and greasy. Try not to lick your fingers, especially after you've added the ground coffee!
Pour the scrub mix into the clean jars and close the lid.
Cover the lid with a square or jute of fabric and secure it by tying it with twine and making a cute little bow.
Make cute labels on your recycled paper. I printed mine on recycled brown card, I put the name of the scrub on the front and the ingredient list and instructions on the back. My 'How to use' was: Massage a small handful onto wet skin in the shower. Store away from direct sunlight. Use within 6 months.
Honey & Coconut Lip Scrub
Ingredients (for 3-4 mini jars of scrub):
1/2 cup Raw sugar
3 tbsp Organic unrefined coconut oil
2 tbsp Organic honey
1 tbsp Virgin olive oil
Optional: 1 tpsp Organic cacao powder (if you're a chocoholic like me)
Accessories needed:
Tiny recycled jars with lids (I used old cosmetic jars from Lush which had lip scrubs and powders in them, mini jam jars I got from hotels and even a mini Nutella sample pot)
Twine (or any recycled string or ribbon you have)
Jute or any other pretty fabric to cover the lids (you can even cut-up old t-shirts)
Recycled paper for the tags
Holepunch & scissors
Instructions:
Clean and dry all your jars thoroughly and remove old labels.
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Feel free to lick your fingers, but only after you've closed the jars (hygiene first!)
Pour the scrub mix into the clean jars and close the lids.
Cover the lid with a square of jute or fabric and secure it by tying it with twine.
Make labels on your recycled paper. My 'How to use' for the lip scrubs was: Massage a tiny amount onto wet lips, scrub, lick off and enjoy. Store away from direct sunlight. Use within 6 months.
