No Waste Festive Season - Upcycled Christmas Trees

As the countdown to Christmas begins, festive trees are going up in stores...

They call to you, saying “Buy me, make your household complete! Give your living room the proper holiday centrepiece.” Christmas trees are a lovely tradition, however like so many other well-intentioned traditions, they have turned into an industry that produces huge amounts of waste each year, harming our beautiful planet.

However, there are ways to sustain the seasons festive traditions, and with a few tweaks make them more planet strong.

Instead of buying a Christmas tree this holiday season, here are a few ideas on how to make your own by repurposing household items or even using found objects from the great outdoors....

Using objects around the home as a tree

Decorate your ladder. It may sound strange but we absolutely love this idea and it’s totally easy. A good wooden ladder can still give you that earthy, homey feel that you want around this time of year and are nearly the perfect shape. Thanks to its rungs, you’ll have no problems reaching the top while you’re decorating! Even the smallest member of your family can put the star on top this year.

Another idea is to get creative with old cardboard boxes and cut them into a tree shape. This would be a fun project to do with kids, and is easily recyclable after the holidays end.

For a less crafty option, you can simply use your wall for a Christmas tree, for example, by stringing your lights (all LEDs right?) back and forth along the wall in the shape of a tree. Or even sticking all your Christmas cards to the wall in a tree shape can lift the room.

Try to think creatively about what you have at home and I'm sure there are a ton of things that could be turned into your Christmas tree this year.

Use found objects from the great outdoors

Using found objects that otherwise would’ve been ignored is doing a great service to the environment. It also has that great natural look to it. Driftwood makes an amazing looking tree when positioned in the right shape.

Even just collecting some pretty twigs, flowers and bushes when arranged together could be a great natural tree alternative.

How about these cute mini pinecone trees. Perfect for a small house without much space and super easy to make.

We challenge you to be ultra crafty with your Christmas tree this year and we'd love you to share your creations with us by entering our Photo A Day competition . Each Week there is an exciting and sustainable mini Lush prize pack to be won.
