Generate your own solar electricity at home
Estimated CO2 Saving: 83kg per month (1,000kg per year)
We know not everyone can afford it, but householders investing in solar panels to generate clean energy from the sun at home deserve admiration and earn 1 tonne immediately (and will save much more CO2 over time).
Reduce what you buy and always ask: Do I really need this?
Estimated CO2 Saving: 17kg per month (200kg per year)
You can reduce your overall consumption by questioning all significant purchases and resisting impulse buying. Before purchasing, give yourself at least a day or two to cool off.
Turn off lights, phone chargers, electronic equipment when not in use
Estimated CO2 Saving: 10kg per month (120kg per year)
Reduce electricity waste, save money every day and cut CO2 pollution by turning off lights, gaming consoles, phone charges, computers, TVs, DVD players, stereos etc when not needed.
Recycle at home or away to avoid wasting resources
Estimated CO2 Saving: 17kg per month (200kg per year)
Recycle everything you can. Anything made from metal, wood, most plastics, paper and cardboard, and electronic e-waste are all likely to have a recycling option.
Much of what we buy gets discarded. If items end up in landfills, or as litter, or polluting our oceans, our planet and the global climate are harmed and resources are wasted. Aluminium cans made by recycling old ones only require 5% of the energy that is needed to make brand new ones. Read more
Say 'NO' to wasteful packaging, plastic bags and bottled water
Estimated CO2 Saving: 13kg per month (150kg per year)
Reject or cut back on these bad-for-the-environment items: over-packaged products, non-recyclable packaging, plastic bags and bottled water when tap water is available.
Tips to help you avoid bottled water include: o Install a tap filter at home or buy a filtering jug o Get yourself a refillable water bottle and carry it with you whenever you can, especially if you are with children who are likely to get thirsty o Ask for tap water in restaurants instead of bottled water, and especially avoid imported bottled water
