1 Million Women board member Lesley Hughes is highlighted as 1 of 20 women making waves on the road to the 2015 climate conference in Paris...
Lesley Hughes is an ecologist in the Department of Biological Sciences at Macquarie University, and a globally recognised expert on the impacts of climate change on species and ecosystems. She’s also known for her role in the Australian Climate Council , as one of six expert councillors at the organisation.
The Climate Council is an independent non-profit organisation formed by former members of the Climate Commission, which had been a government organisation, after it was abolished following the election of Tony Abbott. Now funded by donations from the public, the Climate Council's mission is to provide authoritative, expert advice to the Australian community on climate change.
Hughes was also a lead author on Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the Fourth and Fifth Assessment Reports.
In December 2015, the world will get a new climate deal at the COP21 meeting in Paris. The official Road To Paris website says, Lesley Hughes "not only plays a key role in our recognition of how biodiversity loss intersects with global warming, but is also on the forefront of battles between scientists and sceptic politicians."
We really can't thank her enough for the work she does, and are thrilled she's been highlighted as a leader in the climate change debate.
