This post was originally posted in light of our fabulous My Nana Says Competition. We'd like to share a beautiful photo series titled "Mamika" (or grandma in Hungarian), featuring a Grandmother turned superhero by her photographer grandson.
This is the story of 91-year-old Hungarian Frederika, who has become a viral sensation. Before this, however, Frederika was feeling a little lonely and depressed, so to cheer her up, French photographer Sacha Goldberger (also her grandson), suggested that they shoot a series of outrageous photographs in unusual costumes, poses, and locations.
Frederika is a survivor of Nazism and Communism, who then immigrated away from Hungary to France, forced by the Communist regime to leave her homeland illegally. Goldberger say's that aside from her great strength, his Grandmother has an incredible sense of humour. She's funny and cynical, always mocking the people that she loves.
The success of the 'Mamika' series was entirely unexpected by Frederika, who initially didn't understand why thousands and thousands of people wanted to congratulate her, some sending messages saying "I want to be like you when I grow up". But it's simple really, these photos convey a message of hope and joy, because our Grandma's really are superhero's, and people all around the world can relate to this. Enjoy!
